Historic Overview

This antique color plate features colorful images of Fritillary butterflies. The print comes from the book Field Book of Insects, of the United States and Canada by Frank E. Lutz, Ph.D., the Curator, Department of Insect Life of the American Museum of Natural History. The book was originally copyrighted in 1918 and again in 1921 and 1935. This edition published by G. P. This colored illustration is Plate 83, featuring four (4) different butterflies including one in caterpillar form. The largest butterfly, Argynnis idalia, feeds only at night and hides in the day. They love and can be found in patches of violets. The print is professionally matted in an 8” x 10” brown colored matte to setoff the beauty of the butterflies. Our vintage prints are shipped in a plastic sleeve between cardboard stiffeners to arrive in perfect condition.

Keep in mind, an antique print will never be “perfect” like a new print and there are sometimes tiny occasional spots and/or discoloring or aging. However, we only sell mint or almost mint prints and will not sell anything that we would not be proud to hang on our own walls!!!
