Sweet Lue Louisiana Sweet Potato Crate Label

SKU: CRL1038
$3.00 USD

Historic Overview

This vintage mint unused yams crate label measures 9.25” Wide x 9.25” High. It went on a 50 pounds box of sweet potatoes and dates to the 1950s. It shows a cute little girl, in a frilly dress, proudly hoisting a large sweet potato over her head from a basket full of the yams. You can also see in the background a farmhouse at the rear of the sweet potato field. The yams were grown and packed by the Dupuis Produce Company of Breaux Bridge, Louisiana.

Sweet potatoes are not, however, what this Louisiana town is famous for. One of Breaux Bridge's main attractions is its cuisine, especially crawfish. Restaurants of Breaux Bridge were the first to offer crawfish openly on their menus, and it was here that the now world-famous crawfish etouffee was created. Breaux Bridge became so well known for its crawfish farming and cooking that, in honor of its centennial celebration in 1959, the Louisiana legislature officially designated Breaux Bridge as "la capitale Mondiale de l'ecrevisse" or "the crawfish capital of the world". Since this designation, the Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival Association has hosted the annual crawfish festival, recognized as one of the state's finest festivals.
