    Historic Overview

This 2.9” circular vintage label is for a 10 ounce container of Finnan Haddie from Banger, Maine. The Alfred Jones' Sons company was a very large and profitable seafood company in business from 1855 till 1954. The label features a seascape including a schooner, sloop, lighthouse, and fishing boat, with a large piece of smoked haddock in the middle. The label was produced by The Nevins-Church Press from New York. Finnan Haddie is smoked haddock named for the fishing village of Finnan, Scotland, where it was originally cold-smoked over peat. Haddock is one of the most popular fish used in British fish and chips. Finnan Haddie is often served poached in milk for breakfast. This is a beautiful label with an interesting history.
