    Historic Overview

This antique colored plate features a beautiful image of Wake Robin Lilies. The print comes from the book Field Book of American Wild Flowers by F. Schuyler Mathews, who was a Member of the New England Botanical Club. The book was originally copyrighted by Mr. Mathews in 1902. This revised edition was copyrighted in 1927. It is the Twenty-ninth printing by G. P. Putnam’s Sons of New York and London, printed in 1929 by The Knickerbocker Press. The color plates are by the author.

This vividly colored illustration features a pair of beautiful Wake Robin Lilies in full bloom that hide a secret. This lily is ill-scented (smelly) and as a consequence attracts the green fly, or flesh-fly, who finds the raw-meat color of the flower as acceptable as the odor. The print is professionally matted in an 8” x 10” burgandy colored matte to highlight the uniqueness of the flowers. Our vintage prints are shipped in a plastic sleeve between cardboard stiffeners to arrive in perfect condition.

Keep in mind, an antique print will never be “perfect” like a new print and there are sometimes tiny occasional spots and/or discoloring or aging. However, we only sell mint or almost mint prints and will not sell anything that we would not be proud to hang on our own walls!!!
