Based on the telephone number of 3375, we think these labels date to the 1920s.

The Newton Drug Company opened for business in 1911, at 676 Jackson Street in Seattle, Washington. The proprietor of the drug store was Joe K. Imai. He operated this successful drug store for 30 years, when the start of World War II, in December of 1941, brought a tragic end to the store. Japanese American citizens who lived on the West Coast were forced by our government to move to "relocation camps" in other areas of the country. The Imai family was given a short time to sell their stock, and the store was closed. After the war, the Imai family returned to Seattle but did not reenter the drug store business. I found a photo of the drugstore taken in 1915 with five people in the doorway. It came from the University of Washington Libraries, Wing Luke Asian Museum.

WE GUARANTEE ALL LABELS TO BE AUTHENTIC AND AS DESCRIBED!

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1000/4391/5562/files/423a661d-il_fullxfull.407454333_pen1.jpg?v=1780001757
phelps-drug-store-labels-martinsville-indiana
Phelps Drug Store Labels, Martinsville, Indiana

This collection of five drug labels measure 2.25” x 1.3” each and feature a great logo and design for this Rexall drugstore. We think the labels date to the 1920s, just look at the phone number, 825. The drugstore was originally owned by their father, but operated from 1915 to 1993 under the direction of brothers Robert and Emmett Phelps.

During the 1950s and early 1960s, Phelps’s soda fountain and counter was a favorite local gathering place for students after school, as well as early morning basketball fans. Included in the collection is Epsom Salt which softens the skin, soothes aches, draws toxins from the body, sedates the nervous system, relaxes the muscles, and provides relief from soreness and arthritic pain. Camphorated Oil which was used for centuries by herbalists and folk medicine practitioners to treat pain and inflammations. Copperas used in the manufacture of inks, wool dyeing, photographic developer, and lawn conditioner. Castor Oil most known for its use as a laxative, but also used to lubricate aircraft and wagon wheels, in lipsticks and shampoos, in making soaps and plastics, and for food additives and flavorings. And finally, Sol. of Formaldehyde, a poison used in tanning, preserving, embalming and as an insecticide for plants. Its largest application today, however, is in the production of polymeric materials, like plastic Bakelite. The drugstore was located in Martinsville, Indiana, which has an interesting history. In 1899 Eugene Shireman converted his swamp land into fisheries and started Grassyfork Fisheries which led the town to be dubbed the “Goldfish Capital of the World.” Martinsville also contained some famous mineral water spas which attracted so many visitors that the town still retains two nicknames from those days, “City of Mineral Water” and “The Artesian City.” Quite a story for a town of less than 12,000 people.

WE GUARANTEE ALL LABELS TO BE AUTHENTIC AND AS DESCRIBED!

This collection of vintage pharmacy labels are from Detroit, Michigan. This small mystery can be answered by an ad we found in the State College News on April 20, 1928. The ad was for A.G. Blichfeldt, Ph.G., Cut-Priced Druggist, located at 373 Madison Avenue at the corner of Dove. It indicated “Prescriptions A Specialty” and had the main telephone number as 1279. The Broadway-Fillmore neighborhood of Buffalo had a heavy concentration of Polish immigrants who were arriving in America to escape a homeland ruled by Prussia, Austria, and Russia. They were looking for opportunities they couldn’t find in Poland. Although it started with a section built in 1900, Lipowicz Wholesale Grocery hired Wladyslaw H.
