Vintage Schooner Brand Lemon Fruit Crate Label
Historic Overview
This beautiful 1940's vintage crate label features a large sailing schooner sailing on slightly rough seas with a cloudy sky. Marked with the California Red Ball logo indicated it contained mid-grade citrus. A few of the criteria would be satisfactory juiciness, sugar content, and very low amount of decay. this is genuine, unused old stock label from the Goleta Lemon Association in Goleta, California. It was lithographed by Schmidt Litho Company of Los Angeles.
The Goleta Lemon Association began in the late 1800s and grew to eventually include more than 2500 acres, about three-fourths of the valley's crops. Their lemons were wrapped in yellow or white tissue paper called onion skins and shipped to the Chicago market. They continued until 1976 when they were purchased by interests in the Central Valley and later sold to the Santa Barbara Lemon Association which operated until 1986.
