Historic Overview

This vintage label comes from the Albert K. Walker pharmacy in Sutton, West Virginia. The label indicates the Oil of Wintergreen that was contained inside was synthetic for external use. It was poisonous if taken internally.

Oil of Wintergreen is extracted from the leaves of a small evergreen by steam distillation. The oil is a pale yellow or pinkish and is strongly aromatic with a sweet woodsy odor. Traditionally, Wintergreen was chewed by the Native Americans to increase lung capacity and assist in healing respiratory conditions. Early settlers chewed on Wintergreen to help prevent tooth decay. The oil is mainly employed for joint and muscular pain relief from conditions such as lumbago, sciatica, neuralgia, gout, and fibromyalgia. Wintergreen is often added to liniments and ointments to help ease muscle and joint pains.
