Tillamook Bay Cut Oyster can label

This oyster can label from the 1930s measures 8.75” Wide x 2.7” High and features a beautiful image of Tillamook Bay with a couple of boats and the land in the background. There is also an image of a fresh oyster on the half shell in the center of the label. The label was lithographed by the Ridgway Lithograph Company of Portland, Oregon. The oysters were grown, harvested, and packed by the Tillamook Oyster Company of Tillamook, Oregon.

Tillamook Bay and the City of Tillamook lie just 74 miles west of Portland, Oregon. They were named after the Tillamook Indians who originally occupied the area which has seventy-five miles of coastline, four bays, and nine rivers. The translation the name Tillamook seems appropriate as, “land of many waters.”

Although the state set aside land in Tillamook Bay for the purpose of raising oysters under the Oregon Oyster Act of 1931, there was little market for the oysters. Before the end of WWII, there was little national appetite for seafood, especially oysters. According to Sam Hayes (the Hayes family owns a large amount of the oyster land) "There was no market, no one knew how to handle them or how to eat them."
