Historic Overview

This antique color plate features a colorful image of a Chickadee and Brown Creeper. The print comes from the book Bird-Life, A Guide To The Study Of Our Common Birds by Frank M. Chapman, Curator of Ornithology, American Museum of Natural History. The book was originally copyrighted in 1897 and again in 1899 and 1901 by D. Appleton and Company. This edition published by McClelland & Goodchild Limited of Toronto is the Popular Edition in Colors from 1901. The colored plates were produced after drawings by Ernest Thompson Seton.

This vintage print is Plate LXX or 70 showing both a Chickadee and Brown Creeper in their natural habitat. The Black Capped Chickadee is a member of the Titmouse Family and a very tame and friendly bird. The Brown Creeper is like a Woodpecker climbing up and around trees looking for insect eggs. The print is professionally matted in an 8” x 10” brown colored matte to setoff the beauty of the birds. Our vintage prints are shipped in a plastic sleeve between cardboard stiffeners to arrive in perfect condition.

Keep in mind, an antique print will never be “perfect” like a new print and there are sometimes tiny occasional spots and/or discoloring or aging. However, we only sell mint or almost mint prints and will not sell anything that we would not be proud to hang on our own walls!!!
