Historic Overview

This antique color plate features a striking image of four woodland birds. The print comes from the book Bird Portraits In Color, Two Hundred Ninety-Five North American Species by Thomas S. Roberts, M.D. The book was copyrighted by The University of Minnesota in 1934 and printed and lithographed by The McGill Lithograph Company of Minneapolis, Minnesota. The book was published by The University of Minnesota Press. This color plate was illustrated by Walter Alois Weber in 1930.

This vintage print is Plate 54 showing young and old of two species of Jays in their natural habitat. The birds represented are the Canada Jay and Blue Jay. The Canada Jay inhabits the woody districts in Canada, and in the winter time makes its appearance in the northern section of the United States. The Blue Jay has the unusual habit of mimicking the calls of hawks, especially the Red-shouldered Hawk. It has been suggested that these calls provide information to other jays that a hawk is around, or that they are used to deceive other species into believing a hawk is present. The birds are illustrated at about one-half their actual size. The print is professionally matted in a large 11” x 14” baby blue matte to setoff the beauty of the birds. Our vintage prints are shipped in a plastic sleeve between cardboard stiffeners to arrive in perfect condition.

Keep in mind, an antique print will never be “perfect” like a new print and there are sometimes tiny occasional spots and/or discoloring or aging. However, we only sell mint or almost mint prints and will not sell anything that we would not be proud to hang on our own walls!!!

WE GUARANTEE ALL PRINTS TO BE AUTHENTIC AND AS DESCRIBED!
