SKU: VMP1092
$16.50 USD

Historic Overview

This antique color plate features a colorful image of the Marsh Hawk. The print comes from the book Bird-Life, A Guide To The Study Of Our Common Birds by Frank M. Chapman, Curator of Ornithology, American Museum of Natural History. The book was originally copyrighted in 1897 and again in 1899 and 1901 by D. Appleton and Company. This edition published by McClelland & Goodchild Limited of Toronto is the Popular Edition in Colors from 1901. The colored plates were produced after drawings by Ernest Thompson Seton.

This vintage print is Plate XV or 15 showing the Marsh Hawk in its natural habitat. The Marsh Hawk flies back and forth over field and meadow, like a Gull over the water, looking for prey in the grasses below. Mice are the food the Marsh hawk looks for and, unlike other Hawks, he makes his nest in the marsh grasses, undoubtedly giving him his name. The print is professionally matted in an 8” x 10” light blue matte to setoff the beauty of the bird. Our vintage prints are shipped in a plastic sleeve between cardboard stiffeners to arrive in perfect condition.

Keep in mind, an antique print will never be “perfect” like a new print and there are sometimes tiny occasional spots and/or discoloring or aging. However, we only sell mint or almost mint prints and will never sell anything that we would not be proud to hang on our own walls!!!
