Historic Overview
This antique color plate features colorful images of Sphecoidea Wasps. The print comes from the book Field Book of Insects, of the United States and Canada by Frank E. Lutz, Ph.D., the Curator, Department of Insect Life of the American Museum of Natural History. The book was originally copyrighted in 1918 and again in 1921 and 1935. This edition published by G. P. Putnam’s Sons of New York is the Third Edition, Seventeenth Impression, revised in 1948.
This colored illustration is Plate 99, featuring nine (9) different wasps. The Sphecoidea were known as the “Grave Diggers” because after they paralyze their prey its stored in underground tunnels. The print is professionally matted in an 8” x 10” beige colored matte to setoff the uniqueness of the wasps. Our vintage prints are shipped in a plastic sleeve between cardboard stiffeners to arrive in perfect condition.
Keep in mind, an antique print will never be “perfect” like a new print and there are sometimes tiny occasional spots and/or discoloring or aging. However, we only sell mint or almost mint prints and will not sell anything that we would not be proud to hang on our own walls!!!
