El Moro Diplomat Inner Cigar Box Labels
Historic Overview
This vintage cigar label was for the El Moro Cigar Company’s Diplomat brand and measures 8.25” Wide x 7” High. The label features a sheik (I guess from Arabia) on a sandy colored background. They might have tried to piggyback on the Cuban brand, El Morro (just a guess). John Rees started a company called El-Rees-So Company of Greensboro, North Carolina, in 1915. In 1926, Rees joined with other investors to form the El Moro Cigar Co., which made El Moros and El Rees. Cigar making, unfortunately, had a short life in Greensboro. The El Moro Company was the last cigar maker to close, finally selling in 1955 to T.E. Brooks Co. of Red Lion, Pennsylvania. We believe this label dates to between 1940 and 1950.
