Longwood Plantation's New Orleans Pure Cane Syrup Label

SKU: CRL1087
$3.00 USD

Historic Overview

This vintage syrup label went on a 3 quart, 4 ounce container and not technically on a crate. That in no way detracts from the value or beauty of this label. The label measures 8” Wide x 6.4” Tall and dates to the 1930s. It features a picture of a black Aunt Jemima like mammy with a red bandana carrying a stack of pancakes, against a yellow gold background. Longwood Plantation’s pure cane syrups were produced in a variety of sizes, this being the largest.

The cane syrup was produced, packed, and shipped by S.J. Gianelloni, Jr., owner of Longwood Plantation, from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in East Baton Rouge Parish. Longwood Plantation was started by his father, Sabin J. Gianelloni, Sr., who lived from 1887-1942 and was from Cuba. In addition to the sugar cane fields, Longwood had a sugar factory, saw mill, and store. This is just a wonderful, classic example that captures so much of the times with it's font, image and overall "tone".
