Historic Overview

This California melon label measures 9.75” Wide x 4.25” High and is probably from the late 1950s. It features a view looking down from a hill or small mountain on the melon groves. The produce was packed and shipped by the A.T.B. Packing Company of Turlock, California. Turlock became known as the "Heart of the Valley" (Central Valley) because of its rich and abundant agricultural production. In the 1930s Turlock was cited by Ripley's Believe It or Not as having the most churches per capita in the country. This largely developed from the diverse ethnic population that came to the area.

A.T.B. Packing Company was formed in the 1950s and is owned by members of the founding Bethel family. They process and package fresh fruit and vegetables including asparagus, honey dew melons, and a variety of other melons. The company closed the Turlock melon packing facility in 2003.
