Velera Squid Crate Label
Historic Overview
I love this unique label, its not often you see a Squid label. The bright red label features a squid and measures 11” Wide x 7.25” Tall. It was created for the Wilbur Ellis Company of San Francisco, California who used it for their 48 can crates.
Incorporated in 1921, the Wilbur-Ellis company was formed by Brayton Wilbur, Sr., Floyd Ellis, and Thomas Franck, initially for trading in fish meal and oil as well as cement. They quickly expanded into new product lines, including soybean meal and oil, vitamin oil, dried fruit and meat by-products. Shortly after, they added Pacific Rim products including squid. Since its beginning, the company has grown to become a leading international marketer and distributor of agricultural and industrial products with sales exceeding $2.01 billion in 2007. The company remains privately held, with ownership still concentrated within the founding family.
