Vintage Genuine Creole Gumbo File Label
Historic Overview
This interesting label dates back to the 1930s -1940s. It measures 6” Wide x 3” High and is in unused mint condition. The label is for Gumbo File (Fee-Lay) which is ground sassafras and an important ingredient in traditional New Orleans Cajun Gumbos. It comes from the New Orleans Import Company, which was established in 1888 as a spice importing company. The company later changed its name taking advantage of the local euphoria surrounding the arrival of the Grand Duke Alexis Romanoff of Russia in New Orleans. Thus the King of Spices, Rex Fine Foods, Inc. was born.
It was the first company to offer a fully seasoned fish fry and the first to offer crab boil. REX later acquired Horse-shoe Pickle Works Ltd. Company and brought on a wet side to the product line offering pickles, olives, vinegars, and mustards.
In 1999, REX was acquired by Adams Extract Co. of Austin, TX which in 2002 was renamed to Adams Extract & Spice LLC, and relocated to Gonzales, Texas.
