This Pemco Brand Smoked Sardines label is from the 1940s. It is the second version of a captain in foul weather gear smoking a pipe that the company produced. This very colorful label features the captain in silhouette and measures 2.75” Wide x 4” High. The sardines were packed in salad oil that was expressed from soy beans.
This sardine label comes from the Sunset Packing Company of West Pembroke, Maine. The Sunset Packing Company started operations in 1900 and was the largest sardine factory in West Pembroke. It also manufactured oils and mustards used to flavor the sardines. The Sunset Packing Co. had to close its doors in 1962 due to competition from Norway.
