Quinine Hair Tonic Label

SKU: ULB1152
$2.95 USD

Historic Overview

This quinine hair tonic label is from the Newton Drug Company of Seattle, Washington and dates back to the 1920s. The label measures 3.5” Tall x 2.2” Wide and features an image of a women with long curly flowing hair in a cameo. The hair tonic is reputed to promote the growth of hair, cure baldness, remove dandruff, and cure diseases of the scalp. Quite a tall order, but if it didn’t work at least it was 50% alcohol and you could drink your troubles away.

This beautiful label in reds and blues on a beige background comes from the Newton Drug Co. which was operated by pharmacist Kinjiro Imai for 30 years. The store started in 1911 at 676 Jackson Street in Seattle, Washington and continued to be located there until it closed 30 years later. The pharmacy was closed because of the forced relocation of Japanese Americans at the start of World War II. It never reopened after its close in 1941. I found a photo of the drugstore taken in 1915 with five people in the doorway. It came from the University of Washington Libraries, Wing Luke Asian Museum.
