    Historic Overview

This large apple crate label measures 13” Wide x 5.5” High and features two large realistic Gravenstein apples on a twig with leaves. The Sebastopol area of California is about 60 miles north of San Francisco near the Russian River. The apples were packed by the Pelletti Fruit Company of Graton, California. This label is from the 1950s and is in mint condition.

Apple production started in the Sebastopol area in the early 1900's. The main variety grown is the Gravenstein, a red striped apple which ripens in the summer, before fruit from most other areas were ready for market. This gave the Sebastopol growers the advantage of getting the best prices in the market. However, with cheap land, low water cost, and huge yields Washington State and the Central Valley of California flooded the market with apples. The Sebastopol area’s profits fell and apples orchards were reduced from a high of 15,000 acres in the 1940s to less than 4,000 acres today. This was the incentive for farmers to sell small portions of the orchards for home sites.
