    SKU: CRL1111
    $2.15 USD

    Historic Overview

This label is a real porthole (pun intended) into Florida’s past. The label, which measures 9” Wide x 3.63” Tall, shows mature orange trees being picked by someone in rustic garb as the sun rises and a mast schooner sets ready in the bay. The entire scene is viewed as if looking through a porthole. This label was used on crates of both oranges and grapefruit and dates to the 1940s. Grower/packer is the Lake Region Packing Association of Tavares, Florida.

The Lake Region Packing Association was founded in 1909 as a central packing house for 6 citrus growers. It continued to grow until around 2007, when Lake Region closed the packing house because they no longer had enough fruit to run such a large operation. The whole economy of Lake County had changed, with more and more fruit groves being sold to real estate developers. Unfortunately, the land was worth more as housing lots than for citrus growing. They are still in business, however, picking fruit for the 50 growers that make up the cooperative. The Lake Region Packing Association still has offices at 124 S Joanna Avenue, Tavares, Florida.
