    Historic Overview

What a magnificent lemon crate label. This large crate label, measuring 12.5” Wide x 8.75” High, shows a map of the Pacific Ocean with a large lemon in the middle. It depicts the westward shipping routes from California in the United States to the Pacific Rim countries including Auckland, Australia, The Philippines, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Japan. The fruit was packed by the Johnston Fruit Company of Santa Barbara, California. The label was designed by the Schmidt Litho Company of San Francisco, California and is copyrighted 1917. It was probably used in the 1920s or 1930s.

These lemons probably came from the Goleta Valley which includes Santa Barbara and was the premier lemon growing region of California. The key to the success of the lemon industry was distribution. For nearly 40 years, beginning in 1897, Goleta’s lemon growers used the Johnston Fruit Company to harvest, process and market their fruit. Then, in 1935, an independent co-op of local growers founded the Goleta Lemon Association.
