Historic Overview

This Rock and Rye soda label is from the Silver Springs Co. in Madison, Wisconsin. It measures 3.8” Wide x 3” High and is awash with pink and red colors with a green name. It went on a 12 ounce bottle and we think it dates to the 1940s or 50s. The slogan for the Silver Springs Company was, “All Beverages Bottled with Pure Spring Water”, and it was on all of their crates. This soda label features the slogan, “The Taste That Satisfies”.

The home of the Silver Springs Co., Madison, Wisconsin, is the capital of Wisconsin with a population of around 250,000. Madison lays claim to another food giant, the Oscar Mayer Foods Corp. The Oscar Mayer company was started in Chicago by Oscar F. Mayer and his brother Gottfried in 1883 after Oscar had spent 10 years apprenticing in the meat industry. In 1919 the company went through a major expansion when they purchased a farmers' cooperative meat packing plant in Madison, Wisconsin, at a bankruptcy auction, and moved the company headquarters there. The most memorable event, for many of us, occurred in 1936, when Little Oscar and his Wienermobile--a minute chef in a hot dog-shaped vehicle--made their first appearance and the company gained an identification that remains today. Oscar Mayer Foods Corp. is now part of the Kraft General Foods empire.
