This Spirit of Camphor label comes from the Stewart Drug Company of Wallace, Idaho. It recommends taking 5 to 30 drops, first added to sugar, then mixed with water. It was common to use it for the relief of colds, but with 85% alcohol, who cared.
Camphor comes from the camphor tree, an evergreen tree native to East Asia. The entire tree has medicinal properties, but it is the leaves that are harvested and crushed to make an oil that is distilled to produce colorless transparent crystals. Camphor has a powerful penetrating and pungent odor and a slightly bitter taste, hence the alcohol and sugar.
