This 1930s – 1940s vintage fruit crate label for a 35 pound case of evaporated pears shows the sea god Neptune (if you’re Roman) or Poseidon, the Greek sea god, with a trident in one hand and fruit in the other. He is shown at sunrise sitting on a rock and admiring his Washington State Fruit. The label measures 10” Wide x 6.25” High and is in mint unused condition. The fruit was packed and shipped by the Valley Evaporating Co. in Yakima, Washington. It was a Family business, started by George Hallauer about 1926. They had branches in Wenatchee, Oroville, and Chelan Falls, Washington.
Evaporated or dried pears allowed people to enjoy the fruit year round and they could be sold at more reasonable prices on the East Coast. The lower weight and volume, after removing most of the water that accounts for so much of the fruit’s weight, substantially lowered the shipping cost.
