    Historic Overview

This is a great unusual label. After all, how many tins of French Style Fancy Fried Sardines have you seen? This almost 100 year old label has great saturation of colors with wonderful Deco line work and curved text. It measures 2.875” Wide x 4.2” Tall featuring a sailboat headed out to sea past a lighthouse and went on a 4 ounce tin of sardines. The sardines were distributed by Franklin MacVeagh & Company of Chicago, Illinois. This label was discovered in a barn near an old factory site in Maine.

Franklin MacVeagh served as secretary of the treasury during the administration of William Howard Taft. He was responsible for streamlining the Treasury department, rehabilitating the Customs Service, and allowing certified checks to substitute for currency in the payment of customs and internal revenue duties. Franklin MacVeagh & Company folded in 1932, a victim of the Depression and Franklin died on July 6, 1934, at age 96.
