Terns - 1934 Color Plate
Historic Overview
This antique color plate features a striking image of a number of seashore Terns. The print comes from the book Bird Portraits In Color, Two Hundred Ninety-Five North American Species by Thomas S. Roberts, M.D. The book was copyrighted by The University of Minnesota in 1934 and printed and lithographed by The McGill Lithograph Company of Minneapolis, Minnesota. The book was published by The University of Minnesota Press. This color plate was illustrated by Allan Brooks.
This vintage print is Plate 40 showing the birds in their natural habitat. The birds represented are the immature and breeding adults of the Black Tern, Common Tern, Caspian Tern, and Foster’s Tern. The birds are illustrated at about one-fourth their actual size. Terns are sometimes called “Sea Swallows”, because of their tails and their agility and quickness in flight. They are quicker than gulls and can hover. The print is professionally matted in an 11” x 14” grey matte to setoff the beauty of the birds. Our vintage prints are shipped in a plastic sleeve between cardboard stiffeners to arrive in perfect condition.
Keep in mind, an antique print will never be “perfect” like a new print and there are sometimes tiny occasional spots and/or discoloring or aging (These add character). However, we only sell mint or almost mint prints and will not sell anything that we would not be proud to hang on our own walls!!!
WE GUARANTEE ALL PRINTS TO BE AUTHENTIC AND AS DESCRIBED!
